Raja Ampat lies hidden in a remote corner of the sea, surrounded by the world’s most-complicated island geography. It’s a coral universe with enormous currents and tides bathing the reefs in an endless plankton stew. The combination of an infinite range of habitat and rich currents has produced an undersea wilderness dripping in biodiversity. A true Last Place on Earth “ – David Doubilet and Jen Hayes

Where is Raja Ampat

Where is Raja Ampat Located?

The Raja Ampat archipelago is located in the northwest of the head of the birds of New Guinea, with approximately 1500 small islands and atoll and 4 big main island, namely Misol, Salawati, Bantata and Waigeo. The area is approximately 4 million square acres of land and oceans - including the vast gulf paradise - making it the largest marine park in Indonesia.

Biodiversity and marine life of Raja Ampat richest and most diverse of all marine park area in the world's coral triangle, Philippines - Indonesia - Papua New Guinea. This is the heart of the coral triangle wealth of the world's reefs are protected and defined by Conservation International conservation.

Where is Raja Ampat, How we can get there?

We can get there by using MV Raja Ampat Ship, a phinisi types of ships which are designed and overhauled as required dives. The ship contains air-conditioned room, dining room, equipment and compressors and other facilities. With a speed of about 10-12 knots, the ship left the port of Sorong towards the Dampier Strait between the island and Waigeo Batanta. Air rather windy with a calm sea. While waiting for our dinner diving equipment unpacked and set up the camera pictures and watertight box - camera housing - in the front room.

In Mike's point we really feel in a giant aquarium. So much the number of fish ranging sweetlips, parrotfish Bumphead until snapper, it makes us  confused which one that we want to take a pict. Flows were rather harsh allow this to happen. There is a proverb No Current No Life. As more and more it flows more and more fish. Here also commonly encountered pigmy seahorse. Sea horses are very small and camouflage themselves according to their environment. Of course we must be observant eyes at once using a macro lens to get the image in detail.

Raja Ampat region has more than 1.070 kinds of species of fish, 600 species of coral reef species, and 699 types of mollusk. Compare this with the entire Caribbean region not only has more than 70 species of coral. There is no place on earth that has so much diversity of marine life as Raja Ampat. This could be due to the number of population of the very few who still use traditional fishing gear and limited access between islands that actually protect natural ecosystems from being damaged.

Where is Raja Ampat, What else here?

Not far from the Sardine Reef lies Kri Island is the center of a world empire underwater Raja Ampat. Here are 2 pieces resort run by Max Ammer, a Dutch man who falls in love with Raja Ampat. This place can be taken 2-3 hours by speedboat from Sorong.

The island has several diving spots and the Cape Kri is one of the best. The number of fish and the variety was amazing. Dr. Gerald R Allen, a marine biologist and author of several reference books ever researching marine Kri island. He noted there are 283 species of fish in a single dive. The topography here is a steep slope with beautiful coral reefs and fish group of fish. Groups of fish pompano, snapper, grouper, reef sharks, napoeleon wrasse, barracuda, tuna and giant trevally.
